The therapists who do this well do very little for the first ten minutes and are not uneasy about it; they can let a silence stand rather than fill it, hold one pressure long past the point where most people would vary it for the sake of variety, and read from breathing alone whether the pace should slow further or stay where it is. It is closer to patience than to skill, and it is the rarer thing.

None of that shows in a photograph, which is why the written portrait on each profile deserves more of your attention than the pictures. A picture tells you how she looked on a good day; a line about how she handles quiet tells you how the hour will go.

Forty-five women are on the roster, from twenty-four countries, and every one of them is twenty-one or over, though those figures matter less as statistics than as a practical fact: the choice at four in the morning is a real choice rather than whoever is left.

Choosing one

Most people begin with a photograph, which is a fair place to begin and a poor place to stop. Language deserves more weight than it usually gets. A session held in a language you think in rather than translate into settles sooner than one that is not, because nothing has to be worked out first. When the one you chose is not free

It happens, especially late on a Friday or a Saturday. When it does, the reply says so plainly and names two or three others whose languages and manner sit closest to what you asked for, so you can look at their pages before deciding. The therapist named in the confirmation is the one who comes to the door; if she cannot come after all, you are told as soon as the house knows, and you either choose again or have the deposit back.

Asking for the same therapist again

After a good first session, many people want the same hands the next time they are in the city. That is simple to arrange: send her name, the dates you will be here and roughly the hour, and the reply tells you whether she is free on any of them.
