Where it comes from
Origin
The word is Sanskrit and belongs to a body of Indian practice far older than any massage manual; it carries the sense of something woven, threads running through rather than steps taken in turn. The hands-on form sold in Europe today is much younger than that, a twentieth-century synthesis that kept the breath work and the unhurried pacing of the older tradition and set them onto oil massage. It is worth saying plainly, because the honest account is more interesting than the embroidered one.

The technique
How the hands work
The defining feature is that contact is not broken. A hand stays on you while the other repositions, so there is no lifting off between strokes and no cold gap where you brace for the next one. Weight comes through the forearms more than the fingertips, and the long passes run the full length of the body rather than treating the back, the legs and the arms as three separate jobs. Speed is governed by your breathing, which means it slows as you do.

In the room
What to expect
Your therapist arrives with warm oil and fresh towels and takes a few minutes to quiet the room before anything starts. The opening is deliberately slow, broad contact across the back and shoulders while your breathing lengthens and drops. The long middle works the whole body in continuous passes, pressure adjusted by what she feels rather than by what she was told at the door. Nothing is stopped abruptly, and when the time is up you are left lying still for as long as you want to.

Who it suits
And who it does not
It suits people who have had a good massage before and come away thinking it was too quick, and anyone whose evening has nothing after it. Ninety minutes is the shortest version of that; three hours is the version where the clock stops mattering.
